Debit machines for BC businesses
A debit machine is the most searched for piece of payment hardware in Canada, and the machine itself is the least important part of the decision. What determines your cost is the agreement behind it and how Interac debit is priced within it.

How Interac debit is actually priced
Interac debit in Canada is usually priced per transaction, in cents, rather than as a percentage of the sale. A $9 tap and a $190 sale cost roughly the same few cents at the network level. That structure is a gift for debit heavy businesses, and a flat percentage rate takes the gift away by charging debit as if it were credit.
This single distinction, cents versus percentage, is the most common mispricing we find on BC statements. A counter running heavy debit volume on any flat percentage rate is mispriced by construction: its debit taps are billed as something they are not, every day.
The machine itself: what matters and what does not
Any modern unit taps, inserts, swipes and prints. The differences that matter operationally: countertop or portable, whether it integrates with your POS or stands alone, connectivity and its fallback, and receipt options. The differences that do not matter much: brand styling and screen size, which is where sales conversations love to spend their time.
We spec the machine from your counter's workflow, then spend the real effort on the agreement behind it, because that is where the money is.
Rent, buy or bundle
Terminal economics deserve daylight. Rentals spread cost but can quietly exceed the hardware's price over a multi year term. Purchases front the cost but free the monthly statement. Bundles fold the hardware into the rate where it disappears from view. There is a right answer for each business and it falls out of simple arithmetic we put in front of you before you commit, not after.
How to get a debit machine for my business
Tell us what you sell and send a statement if you have an existing provider. We come back within 1 to 2 business days with the fitted setup: machine, connectivity, agreement and the arithmetic behind each choice. Deployment is scheduled around your hours, and our BC support team is a phone call away after it, with no automated phone tree during office hours.
Vancouver businesses get their own version of this process, including in person deployment from our Granville Street office: see debit machines in Vancouver for how that works block by block.
Common questions
What does a debit machine cost per month in Canada?
It ranges from modest rental fees to zero on purchased units, but the machine cost is the small number. The agreement behind it moves far more money, which is why we price both together and show the total.
Is debit priced differently from credit?
Structurally, yes. Interac prices per transaction, in cents, while credit prices as a percentage of the sale. The catch is that flat percentage pricing erases the distinction, which is exactly what to check on your current statement.
Can I get a machine without a long contract?
Terms vary by acquirer and setup, and we put the term, the exit conditions and the arithmetic in front of you before you sign anything. No agreement we deploy hides its own end date.
How fast can a new business get a terminal running?
Once the merchant account is approved, deployment is typically days, scheduled around your opening hours. The account approval is the pacing item, and we manage that process for you.
