Payment processing behind Cybersource

Cybersource is the Visa owned payment management platform that larger online and omnichannel businesses use to accept, tokenize and screen payments across the channels they sell through. Kubera supports Cybersource deployments end to end, from requirements analysis through integration to the merchant account behind the platform, and works with current Cybersource merchants who want the agreement behind it reviewed.

Cybersource connects through an acceptance layer deployed by Kubera to the fitted acquirer; the workflow in Cybersource does not change.Cybersourceyour platform, unchangedyour workflowAcceptance layerdeployed by KuberasettlementAcquirermulti acquirer bench

What Cybersource is, and who runs it

Cybersource is a payment management platform owned by Visa. It sits between a business and the acquirer that settles its funds, handling authorization, tokenization of stored cards, fraud screening and reporting in one place, whether the payment arrives from a website, an app, a call centre or an in store system. It is built for businesses with real technical resources: a development team, a finance function that reconciles daily, and often more than one sales channel feeding the same customer records.

That is the kind of business it tends to sit behind in Canada: larger retailers, travel and hospitality brands, subscription businesses and enterprise ecommerce. The platform is the constant. What varies from one Cybersource merchant to the next is the acquiring agreement configured behind it, and that agreement sets the cost of every transaction the platform carries.

How a Cybersource deployment with us runs

It starts with an analysis of your requirements. If Cybersource fits them, we recommend it; if another system fits better, we say so, whether that is Fusebox, FreedomPay or another system we deploy. From there we review the appropriate Cybersource APIs with your team, arrange developer resources and test kits, and loop your developers in with our senior contacts at Cybersource, so integration development is fast tracked rather than queued.

When the build is done, we deploy the end to end solution, including the merchant account that settles your funds. Training, reporting setup and first line support follow, from the same team that ran the analysis. The concerns that matter to a finance or IT lead are handled inside the deployment: reporting and reconciliation, deposit speed, security and PCI compliance support, and a single point of contact from scoping through to support.

There are plenty of providers who will take your call, send you a merchant application and leave the integration to you. The advantage of working with us is that we do the analysis, identify the best possible solution and support you through the whole integration roadmap.

Already running Cybersource?

Current Cybersource merchants who want their processing costs reviewed do not need a new build. That work is a merchant account update: the platform, the integration your developers wrote and the tokens stored in it stay exactly as they are, and the acquiring agreement behind the platform changes on the back end. Send us a recent statement and the review shows in writing what a fitted agreement would look like for your volume. Sometimes the agreement you have is already the right one, and the review says so.

Who chooses Cybersource

Established businesses, mostly. Their requirements carry the sort of complexity that might take a newer company to a startup style platform such as Stripe: several sales channels, stored customer credentials, fraud rules of their own. The difference is that an established business usually has banking relationships it wants to keep, and volumes where a fitted enterprise deployment costs meaningfully less to run. Cybersource offers what the startup platforms offer, at an enterprise level, with enterprise controls. There is more to implement, and less to run.

A smaller online business with a single checkout is usually better served by a hosted gateway such as Authorize.net, and if that is the better fit we say so.

Ask about your system

Cybersource connects to a wide range of ecommerce platforms, order management systems, booking engines and in store systems. We do not publish that list here; it is available on request. Tell us what your Cybersource install connects to and we will confirm how the acquiring deployment fits it before anything is scheduled.

Common questions

Does Kubera replace Cybersource?

No. If you are a current Cybersource customer, we can support a new merchant account integrating with Cybersource. If you are scoping a new deployment, we review your platform requirements, and if Cybersource is the right fit we support you on integration and development.

How does Kubera work with Cybersource?

Cybersource is one of the systems we deploy, support and provide payment acceptance behind.

Will our developers need to rebuild the integration?

No. For current Cybersource customers updating the merchant account there is no development work. The integration, tokens and workflows stay as they are.

Do stored cards and tokens carry across?

Yes. Tokenized card data is not impacted by a merchant account update. Tokens remain intact, there is no data loss, and no integration changes are needed; the platform continues without interruption.

Which acquirer would you deploy behind it?

That is decided in the analysis, against your volumes and your channel mix, not by a preference. We are a registered agent of multiple acquirers and quote the fitted margin in writing.
